Hi! I’m Pia and everything you can see on this page has been handmade and crafted by me here in my Melbourne home studio.
From a very early age, making things has given me a sense of peace and happiness. For me, it’s a lifestyle – I’m always seeing the possibility in what things could be and I love to experiment and evolve as a maker and artist, with each new project opening the door to another. I live to create!
My appreciation of sewing began as a child growing up with my seamstress grandmother. My family always encouraged my love of the arts and in school I studied textiles and design (where I enjoyed sewing so much I entered the Australian Gown of the Year competition at just 17!) At university I studied a Bachelor of Fine Arts (in printmaking and bookbinding) before becoming an art and special needs teacher.
A big part of what I do in my businesses is working with customers to create something fun, functional and often completely unique. After Jack was born I began to make bibs, booties and toys he could learn from, this became Cute as a Button by Pia and Jack, the home of everything you could need for mums and bubs (from mumlife essentials such as washable nursing pads and pram liners to sensory and role play toys). As life changed and my skills developed, I realised that if I wanted the bag of my dreams I’d have to make it myself! Which has evolved into Iqueenie, the home of my leather (and leather alternative) goods, such as bags, wallets and other creations. These days I work with pattern designers to perfect their designs prior to release and customers to create custom items, a process that allows me to keep stretching my skills and expertise in working with new designs, techniques and materials. I pride myself on my quality finishes and attention to detail.
